Previous to the colonial era, African military tactics evolved by perfecting skirmishing, a far more irregular and dynamic method of engagement in comparison to European tactics. Adaptive fighting styles were reflected defensively as many fought to defend against the slave trade.

One people who were incredibly well organised against enslavement were the Yoruba. At a time where neighbouring nations were raiding each other for slaves to sell to Europeans, their culture of brotherhood defended them against slavers.

The Yoruba viewed every fellow Yoruba as a relative. As Akala said, wouldn’t you fight if your cousin’s freedom was threatened?
What can we learn from this?
When those in power or those who threaten you intend to divide you, hug your fellow man closer. Do best by them so they can take inspiration to do best by you.
Unity can save us from tyranny.
