Question; why should one grandfather be remembered and another forgotten?
Apologising on behalf of the nation for harm done, seems very British to me
Its objection has me curious of the objector’s perspective
The nation thanks and remembers soldiers who fought for the nation
Erects monuments to animals who served in war and Empire
Grieves for those who couldn’t be saved in the holocaust
But it won’t apologise for the treatment of those who were forced to build the Empire. Millions of Jamaicans served. Their life expectancy was around 7 years after arrival from West Africa.
If you are going to thank the deceased, why can’t you apologise to them?
You can’t thank someone who you force; a thief thanking its victim would seem insincere
And we can’t apply pure reason to gratitude, regret etc because they’re emotional experiences.
My question is this:
My granddad served in WWII and he gets thanks. My entire Jamaican family, between 1655 and 1962 served the Empire by force and they get nothing? No thanks, apologise.
You thank someone who has gifted to you; you apologise to someone who you have taken from.
In regard to the curriculum, Britain’s influence is changing.
The same shores that Britain landed on with a gun, the Chinese are landing on with contracts.
And the world remembers British tyranny.
We must raise balanced, educated children who know of the diverse efforts for Britain and world
