As the Europeans instigated an arms race between African Nations by trading guns for people, most of the people sold into slavery were very war hardy soldiers.

Two examples are Tacky (Tayki) and Toussaint Louverture. Tayki was a Fante king, and Louverture was the descendant of a West African chieftan.

This proved to be disastrous for the Europeans.

1 in 10 slave ships erupted in revolt with some Africans successfully sailing back to Africa.

As movements towards Black Unity emerged in the West Indies, as Africans dropped their tribal ties in favour of a racial identity, the West Indian colonies started to fall like dominoes in mass African uprises.

Key uprisings to remember are Tacky’s War 1760, The Haitian Revolution 1791 and the Baptist War 1831.
