Religion and black history. How prophets and messengers have shaped our history

๐ŸŒ  Please share this to promote our #BlackHistory comic book series which will be released Summer 2024 ๐ŸŒ

It’s no coincidence that religion plays a huge part in our culture. And has done for a long time.

Some commonalities are:

  • African religions, like in ancient Greece tend to be animistic. ie they place importance on objects being links to the divine. Toussaint Louverture would wear a red bandana before battle to channel the energy of the God, Ogun
  • Ancestors are treated like prophets who link us to the divine ie in Voodon and Yoruba religions
  • Spiritual belief systems have encouraged black leaders to go beyond their own needs. Great examples are Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Cecile Fatiman and Dutty Bookman

One might say that the belief in something greater than ourselves, helps us to lose ourselves for the benefit of what is most important.

Ie we might bow down to the alter of the future self, and sacrifice current pleasures for future boons.

Or, Baptist preacher Samuel Sharpe who was so convicted to the bible scriptures of Exodus, that he too decided to lead his people to freedom.

Samuel Sharpe may have predicted, just as Martin Luther King Jr did, that he would not make it to the promised land. Even so, his sacrifice for his people was not in vein.

Religion has been a huge centrepiece of our culture for thousands of years. There are many ways to climb a mountain and as many ways to find a special connection to our presence here on earth.

One thing for sure, is that many important people in our history have been motivated by something which is arguably much too big for us to comprehend. But that spiritual belief has seen us through many hard as well as promising times.

Stay tuned for our graphic novel being released in Summer 2024.

Follow Mya as she unlocks her ancestral memories and lives as revolutionary, Cecile Fatiman.
